APPRAISAL OF BOKO HARAM’S VIOLATION OF REQUIREMENTS OF JIHAD IN ISLAMIC LAW
This paper explores the concept of in Islam, defining
it as striving to the utmost for the promotion of Islamic
teachings, strengthening and pursuing noble causes.
It addresses contemporary issue of misapplication of
as a justification for terrorism. The emergence of groups
such as , particularly in Nigeria's northeast
region, highlights the critical need to distinguish authentic
Islamic teachings from extremist ideologies. 's
violent activities, often cloaked in the guise of , reflect a gross misinterpretation of Islamic principles. This
paper argues against equating terrorism with , emphasizing that such actions contradict the purposes of
Shari’ah in general and in particular. Employing a
doctrinal approach, the research analysed Islamic legal
principles and literature, revealing key insights into the

misrepresentation. The study highlighted the destructive

stability and global perceptions of Islam. The paper
concludes by recommending a multi-faceted legal and
policy approach to improving religious education and
strengthening government interventions to address the root
causes of extremism. It advocates for legislative
frameworks that standardize religious curricula to align
with constitutional principles of peaceful coexistence.
