TSANGAYA SYSTEM OF EDUCATION: AN EXPLORATION OF ITS HISTORICAL CONTEXT AND CONTEMPORARY PRACTICES FOR FUTURE PROSPECTS IN NORTHERN NIGERIA
The Tsangaya system of education, a traditional Islamic
educational model predominantly practiced in northern
Nigeria and parts of West Africa, has a rich historical
legacy and significant cultural relevance. This paper
explores historical context and contemporary practices of
Tsangaya system of education for future prospects in the
context of modern educational needs and reforms. The
paper delves into the origins and evolution of the system,
highlighting its contributions to the social fabric in its
heydays. The paper finds that Tsangaya system faces stiff
challenges. Such as its alignment with modern educational
standards and the welfare of its students, known as
Almajirai ( of almajiri). Issues such as inadequate
infrastructure, lack of standardized curriculum, child labor,
and poor living conditions of the Almajirai are examined in
detail. Recommendations for legal and regulatory
framework for better policy interventions, stakeholder
collaboration, and sustainable funding mechanisms are
provided to support the modernization and revitalization of
the system.
